The cat

During this past week, you went to the dentist again and I'm happy to report that it went well.  Daddy took you this time and said you reacted similarly to last time: uneasy at first, happy after you let the 'happy gas' take effect.  You chose a grape scented 'nose' this time :)
You also tried crêpes on the 2nd of Feb (la chandeleur); you'd had them quite a while before this and liked them, yet you'd forgotten, so you were hesitant, despite being slathered in Nutella (which you LOVE).
One thing I don't think I've mentioned recently is that for a while now, you like to pretend you are a cat for just a little bit nearly every day.  You will come up to us and 'meow' and even imitate how the cats like to nudge us to pet them with their heads.  Sometimes, when we ask you a question, such as, "Would you like some milk?", you will tell us something like, "Well, I don't, but the cat does." LOL.  You also like to imitate Sable (Uncle Kevin's dog) by playing fetch with a ball, but you never claim to be a dog like you do with 'the cat'.  You have quite the wonderful and active imagination :)  love you lots!

First cavity

Last week, we took you to the dentist for the first time, which you were ok with, but not overly thrilled.  Of all the thee things that could bother you, the ones that actually did were: the leaning back in the chair and the bright light they shine in your mouth.  A little while back, mommy had seen a spot in the back of your mouth on your last molar (the ones you won't lose until around age 12).  I figured it was a cavity, and thankfully you had not complained of it hurting or anything.  The dentist said it was deep, but since no pain was there, we might get lucky enough for you to have just a filling instead of a stainless steel crown/cap.
We returned a few days later (Tuesday) to have the filling done.  This time, we went to a different room in the office and I'd already told you that you were going to get the funny gas and sleepy juice for your tooth.  They had you choose a "nose", which is the part of the tubing for the funny gas that goes over your actual nose.  You can choose different scents; you opted for 'bubble gum'.  You did not like the nose being put on and started to get a little upset, telling me and the hygienist that you wanted to leave and go home.  I told you to 'smell the bubble gum', but you kept trying to breathe through your mouth to avoid it.  Unfortunately, I don't think you'd had quite enough of it to really relax when it came time to do the tooth sleepy juice, so you didn't like that part, either.  Once you finally did start breathing in the funny gas, you got much more relaxed and said, "Thank you, mommy," very softly to me, twice :)
When you started to feel the tooth sleepy juice working, you informed me, "It's making a pillow in my mouth."  LOL.  So cute :)  You were still quite relaxed and did an excellent job of holding still while the dentist used her "bumpy brush" to clean the tooth and the "whistling brush" to make the tooth ready to be filled.  Since you were so good, it went very quickly.  You helped count the beeps for the 'lightsaber tool' (the blue light that cures the filling material) and after it was done, you said, "I love the dentist, mommy!"  :D You were also very excited about getting another little car as a treat at the end.  We have to return this coming Thursday for another tiny filling on the other side of your mouth, which I hope will go just as well!

The Mexico song

You have always loved to listen to music, especially in the car, just like mommy.  I even have a playlist with your favorites in my phone for this reason.  Many of the songs, you know the titles or have assigned them one, such as the mysteriously dubbed "bathroom song", which is actually "On Se Connaît" by Youssoupha (and has nothing at all to do with a bathroom, nor have you ever heard it in a bathroom, so, yeah, no idea...)  A few months back, we had done a road trip and apparently you liked when I played "Orinoco Flow" by Enya.  Admittedly, I didn't know what the title was or what she was singing when I was a kid, either.  You did your best when requesting to hear it again, but it sounded like a jumbled word.  It took me about a dozen songs before I figured out what it most likely was.
Day before yesterday, you went with mommy to go to Sur La Table, a store that is about a half hour drive from our house.  Soon as we were in the car, you wanted "music, please," and I obliged.  After a couple of songs from your list, you asked if you could hear 'the Mexico song'.  *record scratch*  The whaaa?  I had no idea what this one was.  I went through each song of your playlist, with you telling me, "not that one" for all of them.  When we got to the end of the list and I hadn't yet found it, I went to the main list and tried a few songs from there...still no dice.
The next day, I was telling daddy about it as we all drove to Anyway's for a dinner out together.  He asked you if you could sing or hum 'the Mexico song' for us.  You stated, "I can't.  It's the Mexico song, the one from 'The Simpsons'."  Ahhh!  I knew immediately and started cracking up.  We'd watched the episode not too long ago and then listened to the song in the car a couple days later: "Canyonero", the hilarious commercial song mocking a gigantic Hummer style vehicle that Krusty the Clown ends up promoting.  The song always makes me giggle, and now it will even more thanks to its new Avery-dubbed title.  Love you lots, dear son :)

Happy new year...a few days late

Yes, it's been a while, I know.  We've had a few holidays since mommy last put in an entry.  Normally, I manage to start the year with many entries, but mommy got sick around Christmas with a really, really bad cold that just finally went away a couple of days ago.  Thus, I really didn't feel up to writing much here.  That being said, I will once again renew my efforts to at least enter a little here once a week.  Really, I mean it!
For new year's, mommy and daddy, despite both of us not feeling our best by far, took you to a NYE party for families at the skating rink.  It was really fun and cute.  You and mommy skated a bit, but daddy didn't feel up to it, so he just watched.  We all had some pizza (which was surprising decent) and you were obsessed with making sure I found you a 'noise maker' (cardboard cone to 'toot'), which of course, I did.  You were upset that the balloons hat dropped were too hard for you to pop without my help, so you cried a little.  Next time, perhaps we'll take a pushpin ;)
Recently, you were cooking with mommy and you always get to pick eggs from the carton for me to use.  As I knew would happen eventually, this time the egg you chose slipped out of your hand and sailed to the floor.  Without even thinking about it, the first wird out of your mouth as a reaction was, "Sometimes."  This made mommy roar with laughter, as it is directly from a book you love to read called "The Best Mouse Cookie".  On one page, it says, "Mouse thinks baking is easy..." and on the next, "...sometimes."  On the 'sometimes' page, there is a picture of a broken egg in the floor :)  You actually didn't appreciate my laughter at first, then realized a couple of minutes later that it was indeed amusing.
Tonight you and daddy made a huge totem-pole looking tower in your room with your megablocks--it's pretty cool.  Love you lots and will write again soon, I swear!

4!

You're officially 4! For 4 days now lol.  Time keeps flying by, as usual, but I wanted to get an entry in for this milestone!
First, We celebrated at grandma Judy's with a few people from dad's side of the family, as well as Uncle Kevin, Nana Linda, and Papa Junior.  The night before, mommy made your cake as you had requested: completely covered in all red M&M's.  I also made you some cake pops, since you love that app so much (and yes, they had mini M&M's on them).  The next morning, we went by Party City to get the 4 green balloons you requested (we'd already gotten the 'surprise makers' (blowouts) when we came for the M&M's the day before).  At grandma Judy's, we had a very nice time.  Mommy and Nana prepped some soups and grandma made chili and sandwich stuff for everyone.  Then it was time to have your cake and open presents.  You got a Paw Patrol watch and backpack (which was full of fun school suppies) from grandma, some pinwheels and something else from cousin Johnny (and his son, who really did not behave well around you during the party, to mommy's dismay), Candy Land game from mommy & daddy, and a penquin pillow pet from Nana & Papa.  You were elated, loved all of your gifts.  You even got to do a few sparklers that grandma Judy saved for you after that!
Back here at home, we celebrated on your actual birthday with opening your other presents from mommy & daddy: a cool LEGO set that had a helicopter and motorcycle, and a Vtech smart car that will work with your airport set that Aunt Diane got for you last Christmas.  Mommy took you shopping with the $20 that cousin Kristen gave you in a card.  We went to Target, where we looked around at everything in the toy section; you finally declared that you wanted to get a game,   You really wanted one called "Bounce Out", but that was rated for 7 years and up, so I showed you games that were for your age.  After much deliberation, you settled on "Hungry Hungry Hippos".  We got this home and you loved it--played several rounds with uncle Kevin after mommy had to got out for work.  Mommy also took you to Barnes & Noble to get your free birthday treat; you selected a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting (quelle surprise!) and were quite fascinated by the chocolate curls on it lol.
On the day after your birthday, we went to Chuck E. Cheese for dinner, which you loved as usual.  You ran around and got sweaty, but didn't win nearly as many tickets as the last time we visited.
On Saturday, we went roller skating again--this was your third time.  Chelsea was able to join us, too--it was here first time and she had a bit more difficulty than you did the first time.  Thankfully, the staff offered to let her try to Fisher-Price skates that don't roll backwards and this helped her a lot (you never needed these).
Sunday, we (you, mommy, and daddy) went for a short road trip to go hiking at Apple River Canyon State Park near Galena, IL.  We did the first one mile trail with no problem.  You love to jump over the tree roots that grow into the hiking paths.  You also really love to throw rocks into the river lol.  On the second trail, we were doing great until near the end--you stopped suddenly and screamed "OWWWWWWWWWW!!!" and I came to see what was wrong.  I noticed something flying near you and tried to get both of us away from whatever it was.  It had stung you on the chest, right through your shirt!  Thankfully it did not leave a stinger, but oh, how mommy felt terrible for you, knowing how much it had to hurt!  You cried out for 'blankies and chocolate milk', so daddy hoisted you onto his shoulders and we tired our best to get you back to the car as quick as possible.  We ran into a snag when the trail required a crossing at the river.  The river was shallow at some parts, but not enough to keep us from getting our feet soaked :/  Still, daddy was heroic and carried you on his shoulders for this part, too, which got you distracted enough to cease wailing and calm down.  We then made it back to the car and headed over to Galena for a late lunch.  It was very good--you ate a TON of the salad!  As expected, you napped quite a bit on the way home.  I think you had a great long birthday celebration and are quite proud of being 4 :)  Love you lots!

Roller skating

Today mommy took you roller skating for the first time.  When we first arrived, you were very nervous and unsure about this whole idea.  You kept telling me that you wanted to go back to the car and go home, which seems to be your typical reaction to anything new (you said the same thing when we went to the beach the first time lol).  After reassuring you that you would not fall, that I would be right with you the whole time, I got you on the rink.  Unlike when mommy learned to skate, they have a cool device now called a "skate trainer"--a bent bar contraption on wheels--that really helps with keeping balance and keeps kids from clinging to the wall.  I had to bend over you and keep my hands on yours for the first time around.  You wanted a break after that (so did I), then I asked if you would like to see mommy skate around the rink once.  You agreed, so I went around once, watching you as you watched me the whole time.  This seemed to inspire you for another try at going around, so off we went again.  This time went better than the first, which made you very happy.  We took another break, walked over to the games area for a few minutes, then went back to go around one more time.  Only one more time turned into three--by the time you got to the last one, you didn't want me holding on at all and even told me to skate ahead so you could skate by yourself.  I was so proud of you!  And you still liked it despite getting a little owie just below your knee on the fourth lap.  Mommy is planning to make this a weekly thing, provided you continue to enjoy it.  I also have you signed up for some classes in the park district again; fingers crossed that they do not cancel this time (last time I tried, all 4 were canceled!)

This evening, you were running laps from the living room to the kitchen (you do this nearly every night) and mommy was getting a pizza out of the oven.  You yelled from the living room, "Mommy, can you please close the oven door?  I'm trying to exercise!" LOL!  Out of context, I can only imagine what someone would think if they heard this.

You also have an obsession with saying the number "one hundred and thousand and eighty hundred and eighty"--cracks us up all the time.

Just now, you came out of your room to go potty.  You came to our door and said, "Mommy, daddy, I want to say 'oh, darn'".  We nodded, then you went in the bathroom and we heard, "Oh, darn!" as you sat down on the toilet.  You are just too silly and cute, hope you know!

47

We had a lot of fun at Chelsea's house for mommy's birthday--you especially loved eating the cake I made :)  Chelsea told mommy "Happy birthday!" at least 10 times (you might have said it once or twice); when we got back, Uncle Kevin asked you what you did and you replied, "We had a birthday!" lol.  Over the weekend, we visited Nana Linda, which, just like grandma Judy's, you always love because you certainly get spoiled quite a bit each place.  As usual, we blew bubbles on Nana's deck, we went to Wal-Mart all together, and you dusted the large vase in the living room.  The reason the post is titled "47" is that seems to be your favorite number to say for everything lately.  You also choose other numbers in the 40's, but 47 seems the most frequent.  Perhaps it's because you are in the 40's on your stats: 46" tall, 46 pounds (everyone thinks you look like you are 5 or even 6).

Something we find totally cute and hilarious is that (I think I mentioned this in a previous post when you first started saying it), if we ask you, "What do you have in your pockets?", your response without hesitation is "arrows".  If we ask you, "What do you have in your mouth?", your response is "springs".  And if we dare ask how many right now, it's either going to be 47, another number in the 40's, or you'll try to make up some really large number that comes out as "18 thousand, 700 thousand, 18 hundred, 45 thousand, 47!"

Along with making up numbers that cannot exist, you also love to get silly and make up words for things.  Some are just one time words; one that is consistent is "sadzy".  You often tell us after getting out of your car seat that your back is "all sadzy".  At Nana's house, you informed us that your feet were "all cobzy", which we think meant that you got some dirt and sand in your socks and shoes when you played at the playground at Atchley Park.

You are also still doing great *knock on wood* about getting up to go potty during the night if you need to, and have only woken up wet once since you started with the "big boy diapers" (these are the pull-ups diaper/underwear for overnights).  You're extremely proud of being able to pull them down and up all on your own.  You are getting better about not screaming so much--although you did for just a moment tonight, after telling me, "One, two, three, gonna be mad, aaaaaaaaahhh!"  I had to hold back my giggle :)  You want to be with me and/or daddy all the time.  You ask to go with us everywhere, not understanding when we have to tell you no (such as when we go to work).

You can read sooooo many words now!  (Chelsea's mom was quite impressed :))  I think that, although you know sort of how to sound out words, you read like mommy did when she was little: whole word recognition.  We bought you a book over the weekend with kindergarten level skills in it to practice; you can read every word in it so far.  We're not very far along on handwriting and such, though--that will come with time, I'm sure :)  lots of love as always ~~ mommy
